Black Beast Shield

With its bold contrast and richly patterned field, the Black Beast Shield is a custom design drawing on the character of late medieval heraldic art. The golden beast stands out sharply against a dark field scattered with fleur-de-lis, giving the piece a courtly richness while preserving its martial presence.

Built from three birch plywood layers, this shield is intentionally thicker and slightly heavier than the two-layer examples, giving it a solid, reassuring presence in the hand. The boards are oiled for water resistance and pressed to shape before the face is finished in gesso and hand-painted. The beast device is formed in low relief, giving the black field added depth and character, while the repeated fleur-de-lis complete its heraldic composition. The reverse is fitted with a strengthened double-leather grip, with one strap for the arm and a longer adjustable shoulder strap for carrying, while protective hand padding improves comfort and control in use. Every detail is executed without compromise for speed of production.

The beast raised upon the black field is a study in contained ferocity: claws bared, tongue red, its golden form caught mid-motion against a night-dark ground strewn with fleur-de-lis. Rendered in low relief rather than flat paint, the device seems to strain forward from the surface itself — heraldry as menace made tangible, not mere decoration for the eye.
