Hand-crafted original
Commissioned to a private specification, this English heater features the unicorn passant argent on azure — a device associated with several English knightly families active during the reign of Henry IV. Delivered to its original owner; this example is now offered as a study piece.
The board is plywood with a central oak batten let in flush. The unicorn is executed in silver leaf over a mordant ground, with azure gesso applied in three layers to achieve depth of colour. The hooves and horn are picked out in shell gold. The internal structure includes a padded canvas backing attached to the wooden substrate with copper tacks, providing impact absorption as well as a period-correct finish.
